La Fondation du Patrimoine is a private, non-profit organisation whose goal is to protect and develop unlisted, unregistered heritage that is not protected by the State and is therefore in danger of disappearing.

2nd July 1996 : Act no. 96-590 concerning the "Fondation du Patrimoine"

Article 2- The goal of the "Fondation du Patrimoine" is to preserve, develop and spread awareness of our national heritage.

Its focus shall be the identification, the preservation and the restoration of unprotected heritage.

It shall support the upkeep of monuments, individual and groups of buildings and natural or landscaped areas of interest that are threatened by decay, degradation or ruin. It will provide employment and training in both the restoration and heritage preservation sectors.

It can issue its ‘Label' to sites of cultural interest that are not protected by the State.

18th April, 1997 : La Fondation du Patrimoine obtains public utility status.

1st January, 2000 : the label system comes into force

30th December, 2002 :  Finance Act amended to cancel tax liability of the Fondation du Patrimoine Label.

30th December, 2002: 2003 Finance Act for the allocation of a fixed amount to be paid to the Council of State from inheritance tax.

1st August 2003: legislation number 2003-709 concerning patrons, associations and foundations.

26th August 2004: legislation number 2004-868 for the allocation of a fraction of inheritance tax to be paid by the State to the Fondation du Patrimoine.
